Cyclospora cayetanensis, oocysts
The oocysts of Cyclospora cayetanensis are highlighted using a modified acid fast stain. While many stain deep red-pink with this method, other appear as unstained "ghost cells". They can be differentiated from the similar appearing oocysts of Cryptosporidium species by their size; while the former measure 8 to 10 micrometers in diameter, the latter are smaller, measuring 4 to 6 micrometers in diameter. Cyclospora cayetanensis infect enterocytes (epithelial cells lining the intestinal and biliary tract). On hematoxylin and eosin-stained formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections, multiple developmental stages (shown below) can be seen.
