Heather Morris, MLS
Heather has been a medical laboratory scientist (MLS) and technical specialist in the Mayo Clinic Clinical Parasitology lab for more than 20 years. She is an assistant professor in Clinical Parasitology for the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and plays an active role in the education of clinical microbiology fellows, Infectious diseases fellows, pathology residents, MLS students, and physicians interested in tropical medicine. She received her Clinical Laboratory Science degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is experienced in a broad spectrum of clinical laboratory diagnostics and procedures, including stool and blood parasitic examination, advanced parasitologic procedures, and the identification of macroscopic parasites. She has helped teach global health courses and hands-on lab experiences locally in Minnesota and in resource- challenged areas around the world, including Haiti and Uganda. Most recently, she evaluated and implemented an artificial intelligence algorithm for identification of protozoan parasites in stool specimens.
Jacob Rattin, DO
Jacob is currently a PGY2 Anatomic and Clinical Pathology resident physician at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Prior to studying medicine, he earned a degree in art and digital media and worked in his local community in Kankakee, Illinois. Through this, he realized his desire to pursue medicine and, specifically, the aesthetically vibrant field of pathology. In medical school, he loved his courses in microbiology and pathology and wanted to learn more about a career in microbiology in the context of clinical medicine. After reaching out to Dr. Bobbi Pritt to learn more, the world of microbiology and histopathology of infectious diseases was discovered and since then, there has been no looking back.
Jacob is planning on pursuing a fellowship and career in academic clinical microbiology after completing his residency.
Emily Fernholz, MLS
Emily Fernholz became a fan of parasites upon joining a clinical parasitology laboratory at a large academic medical center and reference laboratory nearly 20 years ago. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree in both biology and medical laboratory science. She has held a range of clinical laboratory positions, including technologist, education specialist, technical specialist, developer, and senior developer. The topic of parasites can be very polarizing, and she loves finding out whether people fall into team “eew!” or “cool!” and will always find them captivating.
Felicity Norrie MLS (ASCP) CM
