The oocysts of the coccidian parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, stain bright red using modified acid fast and safranin stains. They have a similar appearance to the oocysts of Cryptosporidium species, but can be differentiated by their larger size (8 to 10 micrometers in diameter).
